SPCA pet
- Hi, Just wanted to let readers know that the SPCA will try to accommodate your special need for a dog. I have severe arthritis and can't manage a big dog. I was put on a list that when a small breed dog came in I would be notified. I was called a couple of months latter when a small breed puppy came in, and my Schatzie really is my little sweetheart!

They choose you.
- My 16 yr. old dog, Daisy Mae I picked up in the rain in the middle of the street in Chicago after someone abused her and dumped her at the forest preserve - and she always hated kids. I got Dottie from the pound in Wisconsin, and she has seizures and is afraid of the stairs because Dr. S said someone probably threw her down the stairs. They were both afraid of firecrackers and thunderstorms. Daisy has gone to Animal Heaven now, but that's my story.

Homer found us
- In January, I was watching "Pet of the Week" on news. I told my husband there was a beagle mix on and it was 3 years old. He said "Let's go." I was surprised. We held off for three years. Got to the Humane Society. We talked to a worker there who told us about "Brownie." She was an outside dog and that was not what we were interested in. We looked around and there sat Homer, a male Beagle 4 years old. Cute as could be. Yes, we spent time with him, and yes, he is our boy now. He is the best dog ever. Sweet, a great watch dog who adores small babies and children. And likes the vet!! Came from the housing crisis in VA. So now his forever home is ours. Can't get better than that!!!!

- I never got to choose but one of the many dogs I have been involved with in my life. I have been really lucky that so many of them turned out to be wonderful! I have been making lemonade with all the lemons people thought they were saddling me with. I think a good dog is not something you get handed, I think you have to work for it. I treat dogs well, I am the alpha in my home, I never have issues like mean dogs or biting dogs. I had a Chow, I had a Doberman, and many others. They were all great loving and very social dogs. Dogs are not bad, they just have bad owners. Tex

teddy and schobby
- I never thought about keeping a dog as a pet until my wife bought Teddy and Schobby from my in-laws. I developed love these dogs, not knowing that they'll not stay with us for too long a time. TEDDY missed while SCHOBBY died of food poisoning. I DON'T know if I can ever forget them in my life.

Yorkie Mama
- 1978, we purchased Ezy, a six week old yorkie. Ezy had a few litters and we kept a few puppies in our family. When Zoya, Ezy's daughter, had her litter she became ill and had emergency surgery and could not fed her 3 day old puppies. My daughter had to feed them round the clock in her bedroom with two heaters going. Ezy stepped in and helped by dry nursing them and keeping them clean. Ezy jumped from the bed and hurt her back and became paralyzed. Even so, she would roll over to the puppies to lick them clean. Eventually the puppies became too robust for ole Ezy and we had to rescue her after a few minutes of cleaning. After bottle feeding Zoya's five puppies, we could not part with them and our family adopted all five. One of Zoya's puppies became ours, her name is Kaley Ann. Kaley had four puppies and we kept them all. Now we are a family of many yorkies and my home presently has 6 under my roof. Ezy has gone to the Rainbow Bridge but her memory lives in her eleven children.

Friend with a past
- Charlie was over a year old when i first met him. He had been rescued from an abusive situation so he had some issues. That's okay, I'm a retired cop and I have my share of issues too. Despite his past, he wanted very much to have a friend. Because of my past I very much needed a friend. Together we've worked through our problems with each other's help. Charlie's ten now and he no longer jumps away when I approach him with something in my hand. He's learned that I don't hit. I've also learned that he really is happy to see me when i come home. He's not like many people who only want you around if you can do something for them. He knows when I'm feeling down and gives doggy hugs....throws one of his legs across mine and rests his head on my knee. I understand when he's having a bad time. He hates loud sounds like fireworks and sometimes wants someone to sit up with him all night. That's what friends are for. Charlie and I are friends.

my best freind
- My husband & I always had Maltese dogs, our last one died at age of 11. Shortly after, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. After a short illness, he passed away. I was heart broken, didn't want to go on. Then my son said I needed another Maltese. We looked and finally found this tiny 6 wk old male Maltese. I took him home & was so happy with him. I have now had him for almost 9 yrs. We look after one another, he makes me laugh, he cuddles when he knows I am sad, sits on my lap and I find great comfort with him. Would I do it again? Most definitely, he is a special puppy to me. He made me laugh again, he is trouble at times with a capital T, hates to be groomed, won't sleep anywhere but with me.we were made for one another. He does so many funny things, you almost forget he is a dog, I don't say that too loud, don't want to upset him. I have had 5 malts in the last 40 yrs. this one is the most precious to me, my husband would have adored him. He is my bodyguard and my best friend.

Moose and Jack
- After I put my min-pin Vixen down, Moose was all alone and he has been running with me for a long time. I wanted my husband to have a partner as I would run ahead so I volunteer at the local animal shelter and found Jack (jack russell) but my husband gave up on even walking and now Jack, Moose (Chihuahua) and I are running/hiking buds together we travel all over Colorado and hike and camp and just have a grand time together. Jack has turned out to be the lead, me in the middle and Moose sticks pretty close to me on my right ankle.

Maya
- When my beloved dog, Puzzle, died suddenly of dog bloat 2 yrs ago, I was devastated and wracked with guilt. I went to the animal shelter about a week later just to "look" and fell in love with a Siberian Husky named Maya (after the lead dog in the movie "Eight Below"). She was found abandoned by someone who tried unsuccessfully to find her owner, and ended up bringing her to the shelter. It was just luck that we were that day and brought her home. She has been the love of my life ever since. I will never forget Puzzle, whose ashes sit in an urn in the living room guarding the house as he did so faithfully for 11 years, but Maya certainly has brought love back into our lives.

choosing a dog
- I hung out with my friend and her dog and I liked being with her dog better than being with her. I ended up getting a bichon frise from the same breeder as she did.

It was meant to be
- My dog of 14 years, Buddy had to be put to sleep in November. I began researching dogs, breeds, and checking petfinder.com daily in December. I was not ready to adopt another dog yet, but it was comforting to look. In March I found Leilani on petfinder. The foster mom was interviewing my family and another family to pick which family would adopt her. I left it in God's hands. It was meant to be. Leilani and I walk together twice a day and she naps on my lap every evening. She is a 4.5 pound 6 month chihuahua. We are enrolled in training classes , she is the smartest dog I have ever had. I love her so much. I can't imagine taking a walk without her.

Germans forever
- Ever since I can remember I have been a great fan of German Shepherds.I love the huge size of this breed, it's nice to hug them and it makes me safe and secure to be around them. Bruno is no exception, he has been with us for 3 yrs now. If not for the accident he had since birth for sure he is with his brand new owners. But fate has it that he has to stay behind and be with me forever. Litters from my bitch will just pass through my care ready for their new owners, but Bruno was accidental snitch by his mom in between labor and contraction and sadly his left foot paw caused him to limp to this day. He is such a joy to see and his disability is not at all a hindrance to being the best German Shep. With his bright eyes, shiny tricolor hair smooth to touch, his waggling tail to greet you each morning is something to look forward to. His fondness for ice cream, biscuits and cheese makes you think he is not just a dog but a member of the family as well. My children are just crazy about him.

We're the lucky ones
- August 2008, my husband found a matted, scraggly dog at his job. His office mates and he took the dog in, fed him and he kept the office company for the day. Our family talked about getting a dog eventually, but given the responsibility, it was on the waiting list. When Wayne called me and told me about the lost dog, I cautiously told him sure, if you feel good about making him a family member, bring him home. Events following rescuing "Buddy", my 11 yr old daughter had a fainting episode while at her Dads house out of town. From the beginning, Buddy preferred sleeping with and following Riley. In November, Riley was diagnosed with sudden, unexplained complete heart block. She had surgery to place a permanent pacemaker. Now that Riley is healthy, and no further problems, Buddy apparently feels like he can make the rounds at night in my sons bedroom instead of constantly guarding Riley. We thank God and our angels for our Buddy rescuing us.

The dog I never wanted
- My wife insisted on getting a Golden Ret. and I said no many times. Finally one day, I gave in and said, "It's your dog and you have to do all the things dogs need to have done for them." When she came home with the 4 week old puppy I held it for 5 min. and never let her go for 14 years. Had to put her down and within 3 months I went looking for another Golden. Found one from a champion breeder and cost a lot of money but would not give up for any amt. I encourage everyone to consider a Golden. They are like family and could not ask for a better companion.
