When, Where and How I Got My Bullastiff

I brought home Zorro when he was 2 months old. I got him from a local breeder who keeps Bullmastiffs, Rottweilers and a Labrador. I was in search of a red colored Mastiff. But, when I saw Zorro at 2 months, I fell in love, though I had earlier rejected him for his fawn color when he was a month old. I paid for him, but I think it was not too much for such a wonderful dog.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Zorro has a great persona. And at least for now he is not showing any ego or head weight, though at times a bit of the breed stubbornness does creep in. He was easily housebroken, and his accident rate within a month of being with me is around 15%. He does have a problem with food, in the sense that he has got highly developed taste buds and cares two hoots for premium brands of food like Eukanuba. He likes variety and fresh meat.

Zorro is the happiest around kids and he just loves my 3 yr old son. He comes into himself and plays hours on end with my son and the neighborhood kids. I take him out for walks and he loves working out, we climb up and down rather steep slopes or steps and he enjoys it.

Once on a late night stroll, a few days back, he barked at a stranger for the first time. I was surprised because even I felt uneasy when I saw this guy from a distance, not like the regular guys of the locality I meet usually. Did Zorro sense my uneasiness?!

Advice

I am new to Bullmastiffs and my Zorro is just too new to this world. So I would be the last person who can give advice. But, I can tell this much:

  • Bullmastiffs are wonderful dogs and perfect for a family as a household pet.
  • They are loyal and guard their family with their life.
  • They are wonderful with children, though they do not know of their superior physical strength over small children. Supervision of playtime is necessary until your dog understands to be delicate with his human friends.
  • Bullmastiffs need regular walks or outings especially if you live in a flat or small house, as they are big dogs.
