When, Where and How I Got My Yorkshire Terrier

When I was in treatment for depression, from a breeder who is now a close friend.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Raisin has been very easy to train. She wants to please because of the bond we have. But I also listen to her to meet her needs as well. She will speak, come and sit on command. She sits on my shoulder frequently, weighing only 3 1/2 lbs.

Raisin loves to eat popcorn. As soon as the microwave bell rings, she barks at me to alert me to the fact the popcorn is ready!

She lets me know about anything that is amiss. If the other dogs are meddling, she comes and barks at me to let me know. Recently, she located my cell phone that I had reported as lost and had deactivated. I followed her as she barked and led me to the phone.

Raisin always sleeps in the crook of my arm.

Advice

  • If the children are not too rambunctious and will be careful of a small boned little dog, they are great for children.
  • I believe there is no mean breed. Each dog will return the love you give it. Kindness begets kindness.
  • Do not scold and yell at your dog to be quiet. Rather, pet the dog, calm him/her, and say shhh, or shush. They need to be calmed. Yelling only adds to their anxiety.
  • Some people think it's so cute to tease a puppy. This only teaches that puppy to become an aggressive dog. Teach them to retrieve a ball for fun. Above all, teach them calmness.
