When, Where and How I Got My Vizsla

We bought Nelson from a breeder in Frankston in 2007. When we arrived we were given a choice of two puppies... we picked the one that didn't wee on us. He cried all the way home and for what seemed like the next month!

I'd Describe My Dog As…

One third cat, one third dog and one third human.

Nelson is a high energy, positive, affectionate, sensitive, trustworthy and loving friend.

Early on we had some challenges with separation anxiety, however, with a change in routine he is now relaxed when we leave him at home. An important factor on the whole is warmth - he hates being cold! Hence, he loves wearing a jacket in winter.

It is funny... a new home has brought out the 'guard dog' in Nelson and he has become a great protector of all things material. Perhaps, he sensed that I didn't have a great attachment with my old house. He is a very perceptive dog.

I have heard of Vizslas often being referred to as “velcro” dogs due to their faithfulness and affection - I think this description is very apt.

It is truly amazing how much love and warmth they give (mostly to total strangers...) We can certainly learn a lot from dogs!!

A word of warning though, I wouldn't get a Vizsla if he/she is going to be left home alone all week. They really do need a lot of attention and interaction. Nelson spends most Wednesdays 'working' in a furniture shop in Melbourne. In fact, he has developed into quite a salesman! He loves the regular flow of customers and constant attention.

Nelson loves many things - his top 5 (in his Dad's opinion):

1. Swimming at the beach

2. Chasing balls and sticks

3. Chilling on the couch

4. Running with Dad

5. Sitting by an open fire (or on a heater vent)

Of course, Nelson would say that his number one love is connected with his favorite treat I'm sure.

In terms of medical issues...

* He has had some issues with his anal glands (sorry to bring this up) - they get full and then leak (occasionally)

* Over the past couple of years he has developed some lumps, one around the eyelid which was removed

Training?

Training Nelson has been easy. He is quite smart and responds well.

One of the best investments we have made was a facial harness for walking. This has completely stopped him pulling (which used to be quite bad).

Everyone loves walk time now...
