When, Where and How I Got My Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I adopted my Carly from the township Shelter. She was 2 years old. When my boyfriend spotted Carly, I'd been eyeing another similar dog, but he insisted I check out Carly. And from there--it was love! She was so laid back, not barking madly like so many other dogs in the shelter that day--just checking folks checking out dogs. We waited a long time to get her as the Shelter kept saying they were awaiting a response from her prior owners, but thankfully they never responded.

She's been mine ever since that fateful day at the Shelter.

Will love her forever and a day. Thanks for the opportunity to tell our story.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Lovable, gentle, quiet, can bark when needed, keen sense of sight and smell, muscular but well-built. She's got semi-short legs so she's just the perfect height for me--I'm 5'7" and on the slender side. She's a handful to walk sometimes because she likes to smell everything and sometimes she gets assertive and likes to pull in the direction she wants to go, but I can re-direct her without too much ado.

She's a good eater--I feed her Innova (low fat adult dry food) and also cook chicken and veggies to add to her dry diet. She loves peanut butter and cheese and those are essentially the only human foods I allow her. Maybe an egg once in a while.

My girlie is now a "diva", but I don't mind spoiling her. I have a friend who is a stepmother and her stepson loves to visit so he can hang out with Carly. I concur that Staffy's are great with kids--at least she is.

Also, she lets me brush her teeth and take good care of her. She trusts mommie!

Advice

  • Brush their teeth regularly
  • Feed them high-end dog food like Innova and supplement it with your own specially prepared food they can tolerate (unseasoned lightly salted, chicken, lamb, veggies like green peas, string beans, spinach)
  • Love them unconditionally
  • Leave cartoons on for them when you're away
  • Give them at least 3 20-minute walks daily
  • Make sure you can afford their routine vet visits
  • Don't get any dog if you can't afford him/her!
