When, Where and How I Got My Siberian Husky

We heard about Jack through some friends. They had heard of a couple who had found him running the street a couple of months earlier. He was eight months old and the couple were taking him that day to be put down because he did not get along with their Timber Wolf. When I walked into the room where Jack was he immediately came over to me and dropped his head in my lap, although there were a dozen other people in the room. He had been an outside dog and looked like a moulting buffalo with huge chunks of fur hanging from his body. He was malnourished and dirty, and I think worst of all, he did not have a name.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Jack's intelligence never ceases to amaze me. When he wants to go outside (or come back in) he just opens the sliding door screen. We have to keep the front storm door locked because he jumps up and hits the latch and lets himself out. He loves to talk to me when I'm preparing his food and one evening I taught him to say "I love you" before giving him his dinner. He repeated after me almost immediately. He is the opposite of most huskies in that he doesn't like the cold and won't spend any time outside in the winter, but when it is 95 degrees and humid out, he loves going outside and laying on the hot, hot patio in the sun. Go figure. He's a one of a kind wonderful boy.

Advice

  • As one other person here advised, new husky owners be aware that they will use every opportunity to get out and run. If you're having company over everyone needs to know never to leave doors open or unlatched. They know when you're not paying attention.
  • Be prepared for hair everywhere, all year. My Jack has never liked being brushed so he makes it difficult. Start brushing when they're young so they get used to it.
  • The best advice...Just enjoy the unique and wonderful dog that is a husky. There is no other breed quite like them!
