When, Where and How I Got My Shetland Sheepdog

I contacted a well known breeder and found out she was expecting a litter that could have a male Blue Merle Shetland Sheepdog, my dream dog. I reserved the first puppy of that description and received a call at 5:10 pm that my Quincy had been born! I met him at 3 weeks, instant love and brought him home on Jan. 16 2010. He was 8 weeks.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

My puppy is interested in everything. It took 2 months to housebreak him, in winter in Quebec, but he was wonderful. He is cuddly and soft and sweet and also a sheep herder. We don't have sheep, so he nips my heels, we are working on it. He is an angel at the vet and easy do brush him and his teeth. He has 1 blue eye and 1 brown eye and they don't miss a thing. He is like an annoying little brother to my 13 1/2 Keeshond Abigail but at night they sleep close together.

Advice

  • Shelties are smart.
  • Start training as soon as possible, they are like sponges, for the good things and bad. I made a few poor judgments and now I have to fix them.
  • Brush them and their teeth early.
  • Take them places early, they can be a bit shy.
  • Don't let them herd your kids if you have them, other that they are loyal, protective family dogs.
  • Great for apartments and house. But they need at least 1 good run a day!
  • Give them plenty of toys and rawhides and try to save your house for the first 9 months.
  • Most of all cherish them.
