When, Where and How I Got My Pomeranian

I received Missy Grasshopper (free) from a person who had to limit their dog population and who wanted her to have a good home.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Cuddly, loyal, defensive and just plain adorable company for me and my husband. Missy G sleeps in her little bed all night and never makes a sound unless the cat Ivan is "knocking" at the back door to get in after being out all night. This is the only time her bark is not shrill. It's just a little "whimper bark" to let me know her kitty wants in. At night time as soon as my husband heads for the bedroom she is at our heels and barking to hop up in the bed to kiss him goodnight. It has become quite a ritual. Yes, that's it! Poms are very ritualistic! Missy G is a great therapy dog, though not formally. She loves to visit the local nursing home and was great company for my mother when she resided there. When my mother passed away May 15th, Missy could tell. One night when I was in deep contemplative thought, she arched her head like a swan and laid it on my chest as if to say... awww... I love you. So I guess I could describe our Pom as having empathy.

Advice

  • Occasionally Missy G gets a little constipated. Her favorite remedy is little peeled apple chunks.
  • On barking, my dog trainer suggested to stand at the door with her and allow her to bark once, but once she knows the person coming in the door is a wanted guest, I put my hand gently over her mouth and state, "no bark". This usually works....if not, she goes in time out, in a bedroom for a few minutes. She usually comes out wagging her tail and looking all happy.
