When, Where and How I Got My Mixed-Breed Dog
In February this year, my boyfriend and I decided our lives were stable enough to bring in a dog. We adopted Luke from the local animal shelter as a four-month-old. One of the best decisions we have ever made. He gets along well with our cat and he is aptly named man's best friend. He sure is mine!
I'd Describe My Dog As…
Luke is effusively friendly and loves being around his family, no matter what we are doing. Walks are the joy of his life and he gets two every day; he especially enjoys his off-leash time. We use positive training methods for Luke and he has responded quickly and well. Two 5 to 10 minute training sessions a day seem to do the trick. Crate training made housebreaking pretty simple, he caught on in a little more than a month; he is completely trustworthy in the house as a 9 month old. Luke is highly allergic to fleas, so he is on flea preventative year-round.
Advice
- Mixed breed dogs are IDEAL for families, but make sure the mix you choose is right for your lifestyle. Luke is good with children, but if your dog is to be trusted around children, be sure to socialize him well.
- Get a good training book. I've had dogs my whole life and this was still very helpful to me. I recommend books by Victoria Stilwell or Steven Appelbaum. Positive training is the only way to go for a well-adjusted, happy dog.
- If your mix is a pup, LOTS of chew toys!! You can't tell him not to chew and give him no alternative.
- Mixed breeds = most beautiful dogs in the world. Perfect pets for anyone
