When, Where and How I Got My Mixed-Breed Dog
My family had not had a dog for almost 5 yr. My youngest sons had never really had the chance to raise a puppy. I promised them once I got my taxes we would get a puppy. When it came, we went into the Feeder Supply by our house after church to see when they would have some dogs avaialble through the Humane Society for adoption. They have dogs there all the time and had 3 puppies. As soon as we saw Sunday, we had to have him. We picked him up right away and started filling out the paperwork. We had to put him back in the pen, but the boys kept telling everyone, "That's our puppy!' It was love at first sight!
I'd Describe My Dog As…
He is a joy. Even though we got him and then had almost 20 in of snow over th next month, he has been doing so well with house training. Our 15 yr old cat Nala doesn't care for him yet. His barking, nipping and trying to play hasn't helped. But he thinks she is a playmate. He loves to go for long walks and he loves to run with my sons. Because of divorce this year, we had to move to a townhouse and my sons had not been getting as much exercise or getting outside much. Getting Sunday has gotten us up and moving again and he has helped the boys through a rough time. My oldest 2 adult children also are so happy to have a dog. He is beautifully marked and everyone he meets comments on his looks. He is afraid of noises like cars driving by and my son's guitar. He loves to chew. we keep rawhides in every room and he will demolish a stick in no time flat! We jokingly say his middle name is "Shredder' We tried wee wee pads when the snow was deep and as soon as we put one down, he would shred it right away. My son had a URI and he left a box of tissues on the floor and he shredded it! The look of love that comes over the face of my children when they are with him makes it worth it all! No matter how stressed or frustrated I am about life, he licks my face, nips at my fingers, puts his paws up on my leg or barks at me, and he erases everything I was upset about.
Advice
- Crate train your dog. It may seem cruel at first, but if you don't train him from the start you will have issues. Often a dog's problems are not really his fault but something a human could have prevented.
