When, Where and How I Got My Greyhound
We rescued Bucky almost 3 years ago. He was 5 years old and the first day I looked at him and thought - "What was I thinking he is huge!" I've always been intrigued by the greyhound and did a little research. We really wanted to rescue one and provide a forever home for him!
I'd Describe My Dog As…
The first day we brought him home, I looked at him and thought - we must be crazy, he is as big as a pony! Now I don't even see the size. There are dogs and there are Greyhounds. They are a breed that is like no other. Once you have one, you want another! If I was to tell Bucky he was too big for something he'd never believe me. He curls up like a cat. He slept in his crate the first few months. Greys are very happy and content in their crates, that's why it is so easy to train them. He still likes to go in when he wants his alone time. Their personality is so gentle; they just want to please you. When they look up with those big doe eyes, it melts your heart.
They do love to run and we fenced in our yard for him. At the track they raced counter clockwise and he still runs that way. They love soft blankets, couches, beds anything that is comfy to them. We started off with him sleeping in his crate and now - it's true he sleeps with us. He will wait until we are asleep and ever so lightly jump up on the bed and sneak in between us where he will not move the entire night. Unless that is if he is dreaming of racing, then not only do his legs go, but he woofs in his sleep.
Its not true that greyhounds are hyper - just the opposite. When we first got him, I couldn't figure out why he just laid around and slept. Then I was told that is what they do! We also have a big fat cat that is Bucky's best friend. They sleep together on the bed and the cat will actually lick his face. Not all Greyhounds are cat compatible, but there are some that are.
Advice
- My advice to a prospective owner - get one!
- Read books and do some research they are different than other breeds.
- My Grey is great with my granddaughters, but they are respectful of him.
- Also, find a vet who is familiar with Greyhounds because they have special needs.
