When, Where and How I Got My Greyhound
I have always gone to the race tracks personally and visited the adoption groups there to see a wide variety of dogs up for adoption. I have always taken my time to see which baby connects with me in a special way. Sometimes it would take a few days to make a decision as I take such a decision very seriously. All my dogs whom I have adopted and fostered over the years have come from race tracks in south Florida.
I got interested in adopting Greyhounds about 20 years ago when I did extensive research on the history, character, need for homes, and testimonials of people who have discovered these wonderful lives.
I'd Describe My Dog As…
My two girls are sisters of the same litter. However, their personalities are different. Bella is the eldest ("A" in the ear). She does take on the alpha position but with extreme grace. She is soft in nature and is obsessed with affection and love. She just stares at me when she needs something. I always seem to know what she is thinking. I say a clue word, and she responds promptly with glee! She is very obedient and willing to please - as this is the genuine nature of the breed. Her sister is the fifth pup out - ("E" in the ear), and she is shy and quiet. I often take her out alone to continually bring her out of her shell.
Advice
- Greyhounds are very skittish when first introduced into a new environment.
- Remember that they have never been exposed to textures in a home, smells different from the kennel, loud sounds, stairs, cars, glass doors.
- Please be very patient with them.
- Speak lovingly and soft with them.
- When introducing them to an established home pet, do it out of the house on neutral territory and slowly.
- Your Grey will most likely have loose bowel movements the first few days from a nervous stomach. Lots of soft words of love and pets are needed here.
- Although they are great with children, please have children be gentle and sweet.
