When, Where and How I Got My Golden Retriever

Our first girl, who left us last October, we got from a breeder when she was just 7 weeks old 5 years ago. We lost her to renal failure in October of last year. I could not stand to be without a Golden girl so we adopted Levity from Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies (GRRR) in November. She is 5 years old and a perfect angel. We got our latest girl, Jasmine, from GRRR just 2 weeks ago. She is 2 years old and recovering from knee surgery. Jasmine is our slightly spazy girl since she was so attention deprived.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Levity is my gentle refined proper girl with the perfect manners. She is the dark red version taller version of the breed. She is just beautiful and the perfect example of an older Golden. She adapted easily to our routine and settled in within a few days. She loves to be told that she is a good girl and that is so easy to do with this angel. She is a bit independent but will definitely tell you when she wants your attention. She is loving the company of her new buddy.

Jasmine is smaller and lighter colored and the spaz! She still has all that puppy behavior in her and still needs lots of training but over all a true sweetie. She thinks she is a lap dog and will curl in. She will be dealing with knee issues for the rest of her life. She was abused and the result was torn ligaments in her knees. She came to us just two months into her recovery but she does not let that stop her a bit.

I would recommend a Golden to anyone in a heart beat. They are wonderful dogs!!!

Advice

  • Remember Golden's are puppies for a long time. You will see a change in behavior at 3 yrs and then finally a huge difference at 5 yrs.
  • Do not ever expect your Golden to be your guard dog. They might bark a bit but that is all you are going to get out of them.
  • They love the whole family and rarely pick one person to be loyal to.
  • They can be a little over zealous with small children but in no way is it aggression. Just train them well and they will love and care for your kids like they are theirs.
  • Goldens have a tendency to have skin allergies in drier climates so be pro-active with shampoo and quality dog food.
