When, Where and How I Got My Doberman Pinscher
Dillon was given to me at 16 months, no obedience training nor house trained, my 3rd Doberman, all adults. Very quick learner, wanting to please, I socialize my dogs extremely, all become certified therapy dogs. Dillon loves meeting people, enjoys kids, babies etc we do a lot of Doberman PR. He meets tons of people, has great manners around people and other dogs.
I'd Describe My Dog As…
Awesome temperament, but then I look for good temperament. He was very easy to house train, extremely easy to obedience train, as Dobes are....... and that sense of humor! As Dillon is from a backyard breeder - he is a carrier of Willebrand disease and has thyroid issues (as do most Dobermans). But on meds and as I feed "raw" and vax rarely, he is very healthy. Dillon earned his Canine Good Citizenship, almost as an after thought on my part, we were at a show n go obedience match (you just show up and enter). He is a certified therapy dog, as all my Dobermans have been. We're doing obedience training, as well as Rally, Tracking and Agility.
Advice
- Do your homework! Go to an all breed show, meet the breeds you might be interested in, read up, then talk to people who do rescue, obedience training and "show" the breed you are interested in.
- Any dog with a good temperament is fine for families of small children, just NEVER leave any dog and child alone together! Dogs are NOT babysitters, it's not fair to the dog or child/baby.
- If a family, go to a reputable breeder, and get a healthy pup from a good temperament breeding.
- If you are an experienced big, possible dominant, dog owner with training experience, adult Dobes are the best kept secret, I think.
