When, Where and How I Got My Dachshund

I arranged to get a Dachshund from a breeder almost four summers ago, but when the time came, I got cold feet because I already had one dog and one cat to take care of. For three weeks I regretted it so I called the breeder and she still had him...she said she knew I'd call back! When I saw him for the first time, it was love at first sight!

I'd Describe My Dog As…

My dog wakes up every morning wanting to snuggle and be affectionate for a while. After he eats and goes outside, he takes a long morning nap (reminds me of a 2 year old). When he wakes up from that, the real fun begins as he gets very playful. Sometimes he wants me to run around the house as if I'm another dog chasing him. Then we switch roles and he chases me. I end up laughing so hard I can't run anymore!

On days I work, he basically sleeps all day. When I return home, he greets me as if I'm the most important person in the world and was gone forever. Who knew a doggie could be such an ego booster? Like other dogs, he follows me from room to room and has to see what I'm up to. I talk to him so he knows that I know he's there. If I sit down, he wants to jump up and sit next to me so I almost always choose a couch or love seat to sit on.

When the sun goes down, my buddy just wants to be near me and be petted while I watch TV, work on my computer, or talk on the phone. If I talk on the phone too long and he feels he's not getting enough attention, he'll start barking at me. If I ignore him further he will growl. That's when I start laughing really loud and then he barks even more.

At night my doggie burrows deep under the covers and goes to sleep around my legs. He stays there until I wake up in the morning. I honestly don't know how he breathes!

Advice

  • Make sure you have lots of time and love to give.
  • Know that your Dachshund will sleep under your covers.
  • Secure a dog kennel in your car so they can go with you.
  • Plan vacations in hotels where you can include your pal.
  • Dachshunds don't like to be alone - it's torture for them!
