When, Where and How I Got My Chihuahua

I received Mama Pebbles as a gift. She was 9 weeks old and was purchased for $1600 from a pet store that sells pure breeds.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Loving – very easy to train. She can be moody at times and wants to be the center of attraction. She needs a lot of love, holding – wants to be loved, very big into kisses.

Medical problems: Chihuahuas have knee problems which you should consider. I have spent over $5000 and she’s only 3 years old. Please research. First operation she was 10 months old, and I was told it could happen again. Second operation at 2 1/2 – same problem. Both back knees this time and still being told it could happen again. I was told no jumping and no running. This is impossible – there is no way to confine any dog from doing what comes natural to them. I am afraid of this happening again. I had to buy stairs for her to get on the couch and stairs for her to climb on the bed. I posted a picture of her operation. It’s heartbreaking to see her suffer for a second time. The second time was worst because it was both back knees. Couldn’t walk, couldn’t stand up, long healing process. Pain meds: anti-inflammatory pills, infant pain reliever, and must be on joint support formula for the rest of her life. I was told not to let her run in yard, but to walk on a leash so she can still get some exercise.

Advice

  • Advice - what can I say, I have her now. But, if I was looking and knew this about the breed with the knee problems, I would have looked at another breed.
  • As for small children: No – they want to play with them as if they are a toy. Too small to be handled by young children.
