When, Where and How I Got My Border Collie:

Jewel was adopted by my dad when she was 1 year old (we think) She had been dropped off at a Vet's clinic to be put down. My sister saw her and convinced my dad (who was looking for a small dog) to get her instead. My dad had her for a few years at which time she dragged couch cushions from two separate couches through the doggy door to destroy in the back yard and try to bury the evidence. When my dad passed away I took Jewel to come and live with me.

Rebel, I found at the SPCA at 4 months old, she was to be a playmate for Jewel as she was missing another dog around.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Jewel has mellowed since the cushion days. She is my quiet, gentle girl who never complains and is always ready to play or just go for a walk. She still loves competing at Agility and is the best team mate a person could want. Jewel would have been a great herder, in pet stores she could sit for hours and make sure the Gerbils and guinea pigs don't move. On walks with friends at the offleash she is known for giving us a gentle little push if she thinks we are going too slow.Jewel is the peace keeper in the family, when the two cats are fighting she will steer the cats into seperate rooms.

Rebel, she is my Red Dog. Always getting into things and always busy. From the time she was adopted she would have a toy in her mouth and rolling a ball around with her feet. At the off leash she now not only carries her ball but she will carry Jewel's Flying squirrel in her mouth. She is still trying to figure out how to get two balls and the squirrel in her mouth and hasn't yet but she will figure it out. She loves to have a job.

These two girls always make my day, they are always doing something to make me laugh or smile. They make my life whole.

Advice

  • If you are looking at a Border Collie for your pet. You have to know that they need a lot of exercise. They can herd small children if left on their own. Sometimes because of their herding instints they may nip little ones while they are trying to herd them.
  • Look for an activity to do with your dog such as Agility or Flyball. They are most happy when they are working.
