When, Where and How I Got My American Cocker Spaniel

My husband had just died...two weeks after that I had to put down my l6 year old Cocker Spaniel, then two weeks after that I had to put down my mother's little dog (I had been taking care of her for the past l0 years since my mother died). I went into a depression period...Dr. put me on meds and I did not like the side affects at all. So I decided it was time for another dog instead of meds. After my first two Cockers had passed I said never another Cocker Spaniel - too high maintenance - but they are such a loving, affectionate dog, that I ended up buying two more, one black and one blonde. They are 6 yrs.old now.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Dependable, faithful, affectionate companions. Very playful and when socialized early in puppyhood, they love to socialize with visitors. Very good with other dogs, again when socialized with other dogs in their early years. They love to chew, especially when puppies, so have plenty of dental chews on hand, which also helps keep their teeth clean. My dogs are very alert and love to watch out the front window at cars and people walking by.

Advice

  • Cocker Spaniels need consistent training, especially when it comes to socializing skills and house training. You have to show them total authority as well as other family members. They are also a high maintenance dog, and will require regular grooming, at least 5 or 6 times a year. Once their social skills and house training is complete, they will be the most loyal, affectionate, loving dogs to all members of the family. But it is important,as with any dog, to show your full authority while training and make sure other family members are included with the training. Also clean their teeth and ears weekly. Good luc
