In a Word, My Cairn Terrier Is…

Tough.

Best Characteristics of the Breed

Loyalty.

Most Challenging Characteristics of the Breed

Stubborn.

When, Where and How I Got My Cairn Terrier

Remy is my second Cairn. My first Cairn, Maggie, passed away in July, and I learned of Remy's availability in November. Same color, same sex, same breed. She was 6 years old at the time, and the owner couldn't keep her any more because she keep running out of the gate. My first question was: "Do you walk her?" "No" was the obvious answer. I started walking her every day with my Beagle, Miles, and she was in dog heaven. Not once has that dog tried to escape since we adopted her.

I'd Describe My Dog As…

Remy is the most loyal dog in the world. She follows me from room to room, and if I shut the door, she will wait outside, with her back to the door as if protecting me from any intruders. She is well-trained (thanks to the previous owner) but is stubborn in following commands. Which makes me love her all the more.

Advice

  • Cairns can be snappish around small children and are generally not lap dogs. My previous Cairn, Maggie, was a true athlete, chasing every single ball and bringing it back no matter what (something she taught herself). But if you're looking for a small dog with a big dog attitude, this is the dog for you. My husband ("I only like big dogs!") loves the breed as well.
