How I Learned That My Dog Had a Weight Problem
Our vet told me how much shorter her life would be if I did not take weight of her. Girl was as wide as she was tall. You could have put a plate on her back and it would sit there. She was inactive and would only go outside for bathroom breaks. She had no energy and would not play with our other dogs.
How My Dog Shed the Pounds
I started feeding a high protein food, without grains, and cut her portion to 3/4 of a cup a day. I also started rewarding her with very small milk bones when she played, and went outside readily. It took 6 months for her to lose the weight. Now she plays, and runs with our other dogs outside. She also acts like a puppy and plays with her toys inside the house. My vet is happy and said she will probably will live several years longer because of the extreme weight loss.
Tips and Tricks
I started to walk her everyday and tossing toys for her to fetch. At first she did not want to get them, but as she lost the weight she complied eagerly.
