How I Learned That My Dog Had a Weight Problem
Elmer loves to run with his buddy Whiskey - a black Lab that lives down the street. Although Elmer is smaller, he used to give Whiskey a workout every time we went to the park. However, I noticed that as his time at the park was cut short (I had a crazy work schedule), he enjoyed less running with Whiskey - he got tired easily and cranky as well. Neighbors and friends started to notice the change in behavior as well as in his "roundness". I kid around and said the problem was not Elmer but their eyesight. However, the sad truth was that Elmer had gained so much weight that it was affecting his health and mood.
How My Dog Shed the Pounds
So, I decided that it was time for both of us to change our lifestyles. I started the "South Beach Diet - Supercharged" which required an exercise routine. I recruited Elmer to join me in the power walks (interval training) and substituted his dog treats with vegetables. In just six weeks, everyone noticed the difference in both of us!
Tips and Tricks
- Make it fun. Since he loves being outdoors, it was easy to get him to join me on my walks. The interval training added a special interest as he waited for my command to speed up or slow down the pace. It was fun!
- Do it together. It should not feel like a punishment. It should be a smooth change in the routine which at the same time can help you too keep in shape. Staying active is good for all.
- More vegetables in our diets is always good!
- Find something your pet loves to do and reward him. Elmer loved to play outdoors so our weight loss strategy revolved many trips to the park, and long walks.
