About My Dog's Seizures
Sparky's first seizure occurred on Sept 13th 2010 following a fall on concrete - I believe he hit his head. He has had 3 more seizures, October 12th, 24th, and 25th. They all seem to be grand mal seizures, lasting less than 5 minutes but getting worse each time. He vomited immediately following the first three, but not the most recent one.
My Dog's Diagnosis and Treatment
Multiple low glucose readings, 40, 44, 46, 56, and 58 (normal 70 - 138) and one high reading of insulin, 81 (normal 5 - 20) has led to our diagnosis. This can not be confirmed without exploratory surgery, which we have not done yet. He is on prednisone and eating every 3 hours with Karo syrup on each meal. This is helping, but his condition is still getting worse.
Advice
- Do some research on your own - but DO NOT treat it like the law.
- There are multiple reasons for seizures, for low glucose even, keep testing until you find the right diagnosis for your dog.
- Meet with a specialist or a vet with experience in your dog's diagnosis. Listen to all their advice and get a second opinion if needed.
- Keep other dogs away! My other two dogs attack Sparky while he's seizing - this stems from a natural pack instinct to take out the weak.
