About My Dog's Seizures

Severe seizures. Would have up 12 seizures in 48 hours every month. Phenobarbital did not control them so we added Potassium Bromide. This worked very well for 5 months. He had no seizures. Then began to have very mild seizures, 1 per month for 1 year. After that he began to cluster again, having 3 or 4 seizures over 2-3 days spaced about 12 hours apart. This happens twice a month now. Increasing the phenobarbital causes very bad side affects. We are becoming increasing concerned about his quality of life. He seems happy for the most part. Struggle to make a decision of weather or not to put him down.

My Dog's Diagnosis and Treatment

Seems happy between seizures but the seizures are occurring more frequently. Still on same dose of pheno and PB. Not sure of what else to do. Blood test show pheno levels are low but increasing meds causes him to be in a constant daze, he becomes more aggressive and seems to develop pica (vet never seen that occur as a result of meds before). Medication also seems to make him depressed. Does not want to go on walks and does not play any more.

Advice

  • Always do whats best for you pet. I am finding it hard to determine what is in the best interest of my fur baby. I struggle with the decision everyday.
