About My Dog's Seizures

I have had 4 dogs with seizures. The first a Collie-mix, started at a very young age. We kept her through medication, dilantin, for 5 years. The next 3 were German Shepherds. They were around 4 to 5 years of age. The seizures came on suddenly with no warning.

My Dog's Diagnosis and Treatment

For Lassie, dilantin worked fairly well, although she still had a few seizures.

Harry's were so severe he had to be put down without testing or medication.

Rocky got vary bad, although we did try meds (phenobarbital) for a few days. Then he went into a seizure from which he did not recover. The vet said it was likely a brain tumor.

Tasha had one seizure last Summer and has been seizure-free since. She is not on medication.

Advice

  • I truly wish I had some advice. It is a very scary and painful thing to go through. I have to wonder if it is something in my home's environment. Perhaps it's my husband's smoking. Lassie did not live in our present home. I have had a number of other dogs who did not suffer from seizures. I have been told that GSD's are prone to seizures.
