My Dog's Breed
Silky Terrier x poodle
My Dog's Diagnosis
She began to have seizures about 3 weeks after having her second litter of pups. The vet told us the pups had drained her calcium levels. She was treated and we took the pups off her most of the time.
About My Dog's Seizures
She seemed to be worse if she was very hot or had not had much to drink and had been running around. Once the pups were off her she was fine. However, she did get the shakes every now and then for no apparent reason.
Last week-end (12 months post puppies) she came to us after exploring. She had a seizure which lasted a few minutes and she recovered. She got up and stood for around another 5 or so minutes. She then approached me and lied down and had another seizure. This one lasted 25 mins. We had her half way to the vet when she died during this seizure in my arms.
My Dog's Diagnosis and Treatment
She was treated with fluids and calcium by the vet and spent two different times at the vet overnight. The vet told us that a dog that is susceptible to calcium deficiency having puppies will get worse with every litter and it could eventually kill her. Needless to say after this litter we had her spade.
Advice
- She seemed to be worse if she was hot or when she was running around and over excited.
