About My Dog's Seizures

When Ginger had her first seizure, I thought it was a heart attack. She seemed confused for hours and very needy. She panted constantly and insisted on being very close to me, yet she didn't seem able to understand common commands. I took her to the vet and she knew immediately it was a seizure. Ginger died nearly a year later from the brain tumor and had many of these types of seizures. She never had the shaking that I normally associated with a seizure.

My Dog's Diagnosis and Treatment

Blood tests, x rays. The vet prescribed prednisone and phenobarbital. The vet estimated 6 to 12 weeks for the disease to take her. I read about a study that was being done at a university that was testing fish oil effects on meningiomas in humans. I started Ginger on 1000 MG of fish oil each day and she lived another year. Her quality of life was very good up until her last day when she had a major seizure (status epilepticus) and I had to have her euthanized.

She is missed much.

Advice

  • Don't give up.
  • Follow the vet's advice and research the condition to see what other vets are doing.

Jenna Stregowski, RVT, Dogs Guide, says:

Paul, I am so sorry that you lost Ginger. However, I am glad you were able to have that extra time with her while her quality of life was good. Ginger's story is a good example of how alternative/natural medicine and positive thinking can have a beneficial effect on health.

Ginger's episodes show that not all seizures will involve convulsions. Depending on the part of the brain affected, seizures can manifest themselves in a variety of ways.
