Dog Training and Behavior

By Jenna Stregowski, RVT, About.com Guide to Dogs

Training your dog to behave well, and not react in certain situations is extremely important. No matter what your problem is, you should find your answer here.

  4. Bad Behavior

Good Petiquette

Are people reluctant to come inside your home because it looks like they'll get slobbered, pounced, or peed on by your dog? Do your dogs love to greet a visitor with all the joy of meeting a new playmate? Does your dog defy gravity to get a good lick at a visitor's face? Even if you don't mind this behavior, the odds are very good that your visitors do. Submissive urination can be controlled, and you can teach your dogs not ambush your visitors with a little (okay, a LOT) of patience.

Puppy Training

Your new puppy is just a sponge, eager to soak up knowledge. The sooner you get started, the better the foundation your dog will have as he grows and matures into his personality. Early puppy training will help set the tone for the rest of his life.

Basic Commands

Every well-behaved dog has a firm grasp of the basic commands in dog training. These are the commands that every dog needs to know, at the very least, in order to get along well with humans. As a responsible dog owner, it's your job to teach it to them.

Bad Behavior

Frustrating, maddening, and enough to make you sometimes wish you didn't have a dog, these problem behaviors can be overcome with diligence and training.
