I have been a volunteer at our local humane society, I am the vice president of my granddaughter's school parent teacher organization, I am 55 and have been involved with dogs for, I'd say, about 54 years. I am now retired after a 35 year career with a large communications corporation and at this moment in time am the proud companion of 2 chihuahua's, 1 yorkie mix and a heinz 57...we cannot figure out what breed she is but she has a huge heart, was badly mistreated and abused, and still cuddles with cats if she feels they need it...whether they like it or not!
Right after I had retired from my job, I volunteered at our local animal shelter. I was responsible for helping people look through the various books for lost and found pets walking people thru the various kennels where the dogs who had been turned in or had been picked up were located. One day during a lull in the hectic day, a man brought in a ball of fluff and told the person at the desk that he was turning in his dog, that he was too much trouble and that he didn't want it any more. The desk person gave him the appropriate forms to fill out, which the man did and surrendered the dog after the desk person advised of the hold time, etc. The man told her that she was aware of the shelter policies, handed over this dog, and walked out with a smile on his face.
