What better way to make your pup feel truly special on Valentine’s day than with some homemade treats infused with love? These healthy treats are great anytime of year, but the heart shape makes them ideal Valentine's Day treats! Remember that treats should never make up more than 5-10% of your dog's diet. Use caution when feeding these or any treats to dogs with sensitive stomachs or food allergies.

Recipe from Lucy Postins of The Honest Kitchen (reprinted with permission).

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 50 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour, 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb fresh raw organic beef liver or chicken liver
  • 3 free range eggs
  • ¼ cup canola or other vegetable oil
  • 1 clove fresh garlic, crushed
  • 2 cups instant oats
  • 1 Tbsp applesauce (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)
  • 3 Tbsp powdered kelp
  • Filtered water sufficient to make a batter

Preparation:

Process the liver in a blender or food processor until completely pureed. Beat the eggs in a bowl and pour in the oil. Add the liver. Mix in the dry ingredients slowly, stirring continuously so they are thoroughly combined. Add water gradually, until you have a "batter" consistency. Pour this batter into a loaf tin. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool in the tin until able to be handled, then gently turn the loaf out onto a rack and refrigerate to cool completely. Slice with a sharp knife and then dice into bite sized pieces, or cut with heart-shaped cookie cutter. Store in a sealed container.

Liver is NOT yucky, Member sidneygirl

I haven't followed this exact recipe....my recipe was very similar tho ( liver/eggs/1/2cWWflour/.25cRolledOats/.25cShredded Cheese)..Anyway...my dog Rebel who will not come NEAR the bathroom for fear of having to get wet will jump into our huge garden tub And he will lay down in the shower stall Just to get one bite of this liver stuff. It MAY seem like something yucky to ""humans"" , but I promise you...your dog will LOVE you and do Anything for liver. It's not as nasty as you might think. SO, Make this for your babies! Go do it. Now. before you chicken out. ~tracy
