Cherry Eye

by Krista Mifflin
for About.com

Cherry Eye :
A congenital defect, prolapse of the tear gland in the third eyelid, Cherry Eye is most common in Beagles, Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, and Cocker Spaniels. The gland bulges out from beneath the eyelid when the attachments on the underside of the eyelid are weak. The name "Cherry Eye" comes from the cherry-like appearance of the normal sized tear gland. Cherry Eye tends to irritate the surface of the eye and cause recurrent conjunctivitis.
Available Treatments:
Corrective surgery can be done to reposition the third eyelid and the prolapsed tear gland, allowing in continual tear production.
