Lyme Disease in Dogs

A Tick-Bourne Disease

by Krista Mifflin
for About.com

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, spread through the bite of an infected tick. Left untreated, it can affect your dog's major organs like his heart, lungs, and liver.

Lyme Disease Symptoms
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Joint Pain
  • Loss of appetite

The Lyme Vaccine
A lyme disease vaccine is available to most dogs, but it is far better to prevent a tick from burrowing into your dog in the first place. Use of tick repellents or medications that kill ticks on contact is your dog's best defense against this tick-borne disease.
