Lucaya Meeka

This is Lucaya Meeka who is a 4 year old German Shepard. Lucaya was born with megaesophagus which is a genetic defect that is not so uncommon in GSDs. This is a genetic disorder in which the esophagus "sags" and the muscles that cause peristalis are either very weak or non-existent. Lucaya needs to be fed in an upright position, ideally standing on her hind legs. Although 2 vets have told us that most pups born with megaesophagus don't usually make it to 6 weeks of age, she is living proof that with LOTS of TLC and LOTS of human food (along with a good carpet shampooer) dogs with this affliction can live a happy, healthy life.
