Dogs do have a natural smell to them, and it's not always a pleasant one. "Wet Dog" in particular can be a funky smell better left outside. If you find that your dog's odour is somewhat nastier than normal, or even if his normal smell seems stronger than it should be, there a few things you can do to find out if it's normal for her, or if there is a problem.
Is it Normal?
A quick vet check-up is the best way to start. Once your fears are eased that your dog isn't suffering any ailments that give him a strong-smelling pelt, you can try these other ideas.
If He's Just Funky
Bathing Regularly ...or Not
You can try to reduce the smell by regular baths, and a mild shampoo. One important thing to note, however, is if you are already bathing him frequently, that may also be the cause of his smell. Washing away his natural oils in his fur may cause dandruff and dry skin. Changing shampoos, or using no shampoo at all may bring about the desired change.
What Goes In, Eventually Comes Out
In every way, whatever you put into your dog, will come back out. That goes with training, time, care and especially ... food. Cutting out excessive treats, table scraps, and maybe even a total diet change might be what's needed. Watch the ingredients on your dog's main source of food and try to get a food with no soy or corn.
If All Else Fails ...
Then my sure-fire, guaranteed, one-hundred-percent effective method is what's called for next: noseplugs.
