Golden Retrievers originated from the Scottish Highlands, where they were used primarily as hunting dogs. The breed was developed throughout the 19th century in Scotland and eventually gained popularity in England. In the early 20th century, Goldens were introduced to North America. The breed continued to gain popularity worldwide as both hunting dog and companion.

Males: 65-75 pounds
Females: 55-65 pounds

Responsible breeders strive to maintain the highest breed standards as established by kennel clubs like the AKC. Dogs bred by these standards are less likely to inherit health conditions. However, some hereditary health problems can occur in the breed. The following are some conditions to be aware of:

Golden Retrievers are medium-sized athletic dogs with energetic natures. They have medium-length hair that should be brushed frequently. Goldens are known for are known for their kind eyes, loyalty and enthusiasm for life. Though bred as hunting dogs, these qualities also make them excellent family dogs. Goldens usually get along well with children and are known to be incredibly affectionate and intelligent.

Golden Retrievers make wonderful service dogs. They are often very successful as guide, assistance, or search and rescue dogs.
