Later in the 1800's, these dogs were being called Round Heads or Bull Terriers. In 1891, the name was changed to Boston Terrier. Two years later, the breed was admitted to the AKC. The Boston Terrier gradually increased in popularity since then, become one of the more popular companion dog breeds seen today.

According to the AKC breed standard, weight is divided into the following:
- Under 15 pounds
- 15 pounds and under 20 pounds
- 20 pounds and not to exceed 25 pounds

About the Breed:
The short coat of the Boston Terrier requires little more than routine grooming. This breed tends to shed at a fairly average rate.
As with any dog breed, proper training is a must for the Boston Terrier. This is smart dog breed that is typically very responsive to obedience training.
Due to the moderate to high energy level of the Boston Terrier, routine exercise is very important. However, be cautious not to overdo it. The breed is prone to breathing difficulties and overheating due to its short muzzle.
Overall, Boston Terriers have friendly, gentle dispositions and make lovely companions for many types of households. This breed is very loyal and tends to bond closely with its owner.
