Getting a new puppy is sort of like giving birth, but without all the pain, effort and astronomical hospital bills. Although, much like a new baby, there are some things you need to do before you bring your bundle of joy home.
Puppy-proofing your home is a must. Puppies are curious and will bite, lick, and eat anything -- no matter how horrid it might smell. This means all chemicals, cleaning agents, cords, tiny toys, tools and other dangerous objects need to be put up and out of your puppy's reach.
Also, check with your veterinarian or local pet store about the best food for baby dogs. They will usually have particular blends that may benefit the pup. As the old adage goes: the dog is what it eats. So make sure it is given a well-balanced diet, fed according to the directions and that it has a source of fresh water available at all times.
No one likes a smelly home. To avoid this, start toilet training the puppy right away. While you probably shouldn’t put it in a diaper (people will talk), you can control accidents by confining the puppy to a small area of your home and laying down newspapers or a puppy training pad. Putting the puppy’s bedding here, too, will help it get used to what is the toilet area and what is the "no-go" zone. Praising your puppy when it goes on the puppy pads will also reinforce the habit.
When you get your new puppy home, remember it is just a baby. It needs lots of love, rest, attention, care, and playtime. But above all, enjoy. You have a new pet!
