Even if you walk into a shelter and adopt the first dog you see, you should still have given yourself a few days beforehand to prepare yourself and your household for your new dog. Getting a dog needs to be a well-thought out decision, even if the actual dog wasn't selected yet. Not to mention, that having these few preparations accomplished shows forethought and planning, and will stand you in stead when you talk to the breeder or shelter workers.
