Conformation Dog Shows

by Krista Mifflin
for About.com

Conformation Dog Shows are the pageants of dog shows, measuring dogs against their breed standards, in physical appearance, temperament, and movement. As these shows are to evaluate and title breeding stock, altered dogs are not eligible to enter conformation competitions put on by the AKC. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the most well-known conformation show in the United States.

Is my dog eligible?
To enter conformation shows in most kennel clubs, a dog must :
  • be registered with that kennel club
  • meet the age requirements (often 6 months of age and older)
  • meet the requirements of it's breed standard for that kennel club (ex.: a CKC Schnauzer must meet the CKC breed standard to be eligible to compete in a CKC Conformation event.)
  • meet any other requirements put forth by the hosting kennel club.

  • How does my dog get titled?
A Championship title is awarded when a dog has earned a set amount of points in the Conformation Ring. You can view the AKC Point Schedule for Conformation (pdf file) online.
