Friday, September 20th, 2002, the American Partnership for Pets released the new Spay and Neuter Awareness stamps.
With the pet overpopulation situation at an all-time high, spaying and neutering pets is the most important thing a pet owner can do. Something must be done. Thanks to New York City animal rights advocate, Sally Giovanis, and her brilliant idea, maybe we can put an end to the "throw-away" pets, and reduce the number of pets born every year.
PaLC (Prevent a Litter Coalition) and the U.S.P.S, have formed the American Partnership for Pets, and the Spay/Neuter message will reach thousands of dog and cat owners nationwide. With more than 4 million pets euthanized in shelters every year, these stamps are a very important part of promoting responsible pet ownership.
The United States Postal Service is issuing 200 million commemorative stamps to increase social awareness regarding the spaying and neutering of pets to help reduce the pet overpopulation, along with "Mentoring a Child" stamps. Postmasters nationwide have recieved a "field kit" full of information about spaying and neutering to help spread the word and are encouraged to work with veterinarians and animal shelters.
The stamps feature the adorable faces of Kirby the puppy, and Samantha the kitten, who were themselves shelter pets. Every set of stamps sold will contain this information: "For Spay/Neuter call 1-888-pets911 or visit www.pets911.com" , and post offices across America will display posters that have have the following information: "4-5 million animals euthanized,
spay/neuter, find your local services at www.pets911.com or 1-888-pets911"
The unvieling of the stamps was held at the Tufts Animal Expo on September 12th, 2002, and today is the first day of issue. Starting in Denver at the American Humane
Association's National Humane Conference, and making their way into sales all across the United States. Stamps are now available for purchase at local post offices nationwide, via phone at 1-800-STAMP24 or online at www.usps.gov.
