"Define what a "puppy mill" is to you. What do you automatically think of when you hear the label?"

"Well my opinion will seem very harsh. I have a bumper sticker on my car that I firmly believe in. It reads "Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die."

My definition of a puppy mill is anyone that mass produces animals for profit. Especialy horrifying are the breeders that euthanize animals because they are born anything less than perfect. With hundreds of thousands of animals being put to sleep because there are no homes for them bringing more animals into the world for monitary gain seems horribly irresponsible to me."

"Cruella Deville breeding puppies for profit comes to mind."

"When I hear "Puppy Mill" I think of stacks of wire cages with sad sad dogs stuffed inside, that never get out. Hungry dogs with sad eyes, with cut paws from standing on wire, with infections and illnesses from having the dogs above them pee and poo on them. I think of irresponsible breeding of whatever dogs are handy to produce "novelty" or "rare" breeds like "puggles" and anything-"poos". I think of greedy people who don't care for or about animals but only about $$$. I think of puppies in pet stores that cost hundreds of dollars but usually end up being sickly, don't come with papers, and who knows what happens to them if they don't sell while they're still "cute". I think of bitches being over bred, and likely receiving no extra food while they're pregnant, let alone veterinary care. To me, "Puppy Mill" is synonymous with Suffering, Pain, and Abuse."

"I get the same mental picture that the other two posters wrote about. In addition, I think of all the back-yard breeders and "kitchen" breeders who acquire a male and female of a certain breed, and continue to churn out puppy after puppy, without taking any of the precautions that an ethical and responsible breeder would. Maybe they're not so money-oriented, but they're still puppy-millers in my book."

"Breeding an animal just for the sheer thought of getting paid for it and not caring if the animals, any animals are healthy in every aspect of their life. Whether it be a back yard full of them or just a litter. They are not vet checked kept in small filthy cages and are not given the proper human companionship that is needed for them to develope correctly so they don't have to come into a new family with all the problems a dog from this situation would have. They need love, nutrition, vet checks, socializing, cleanliness. I think that is what my idea of a puppy mill is."

"Here is how I define a "puppy mill".
"Breeding and or selling animals for profit".

"My opinion: a puppy mill is the exact opposite of your description of a responsible breeder in your recent (fine) article!

In addition:

  • Grinds out puppies as quickly as possible (every cycle when possible)
  • Tries to make a profit
  • Doesn't overly concern with health (both genetic and minute by minute).
  • Doesn't socialize the pups.
  • Has many breeding bitches.
  • Sells pups at "pet stores"
  • "
