Rowena is my BABY! My mom told me of a woman with a litter of puppies. I told her I wanted one, so she called and found out what colors the females were. Ro was the only brindle, and I picked her, sight unseen. Hubby and I were staying with his parents, and at first it was ok for me to get a pup, then they changed their minds. My parents felt bad for me, so they picked Ro up, called me and said Come over, I have a surprise for you.
She was the CUTEST puppy ever! We bonded right then and there. She had to stay with my parents for awhile, but I went over and picked her up every chance I got. Finally, she got to live with us. Randy was working nights, and I had Ro, and two other small dogs. I didnt really feel safe, being home alone, with only 3 small dogs. So, we decided to find a big dog.
One day, we were talking about it, and Randy said, Only if it has lab in it. So, we stopped by Wal-Mart, because the Humane Society has a woman go there often with dogs. And, there tied to the post, was Ziggy. Black Lab and something. I was like LOOK HONEY!!!! There is my dog! We talked to her, and found out that Ziggy was a foster dog, needing a home. So I was like, We will take him! I think he was meant for us :)
SHELTERS are the greatest place to find a dog! Those poor puppies need homes, and make great dogs. Ziggy is a wonderful boy. I couldnt have asked for a better dog, except for Rowena. None will ever compare to her ;) hehehe
I generally say get a Mixed breed, because I have always had them, and think that they get the best qualities of whatever breeds they are mixed with. Even having Abby, our purebred Rottie, I think I would get a mixed breed over a purebred again. Just something about them :)
Rowena is my baby. She has a wonderful personality, and even at 6 is not slowed down one bit! I can do anything to her, even if she is in pain. Like the time we were at the lake, and she ran along the shore and got caught by a fish hook. She was cauht by her tongue, and her hind leg. Tongue because she bit it trying to get it to let go of her hind leg.
I held her, and Randy gently pulled the hooks free. She never whimpered. She still has the mark on her tongue too.
When I took her in to get her spayed, the vet kept her over night, because he thought she was in pain, since every time they touched her, she cried. When I took her home, I was worried, since I didnt want her to be in pain! 10 days later, when it was time to take her in to have the stitches removed, she cried when the nurse touched her! She wasn't in pain before, she just didnt like them, and wanted me! :)
Another thing Ro always does for me, is warm me up. You would never guess how much heat a small dog puts out, until you have one snuggled up to you under the covers! If I get cold, I just have to tell her, and she comes up and snuggles up to my stomach! When its bedtime, I just say Ro, go to bed, and she works her way under the blankets.
She has this silly thing, we call the Foot Thing. She stands in one spot, and drags each foot on the floor, quickly. Its so cute! And she loves to zoom around the house. Periodically, she just starts running as fast as she can, grabbing the carpet with her nails for turns. Its the funniest thing to watch! As you can see, I could probably go on and on :)
Now for Ziggy. His favorite things are having someone scratch right at the base of his tail, and going hunting. Granted, he doesnt retrieve anything, but if you fire a gun, he will run and run and run until you fire it again. Great way to exercise him. He always runs in the direction you fire too. Silly boy.
His other favorite is swimming. He doesnt care if there is snow on the ground and ice in the water, he will jump in. Generally before we can stop him! He has this extremely thick undercoat, and apparently doesnt get cold. Its a pain in the butt to brush out in summer though. When we take him to the lake, instead of running along shore when we walk, he swims. I have to make him come out and take a break! Just like when he chases a ball. As long as you throw it, he will chase it. I have him take breaks periodically, and get a drink. Or else he would forget I think :)
When we got him from the humane society, he was shy. Took him at least a week before he even made any noise! I dont think he had a very easy life either. He refuses to go into a dog house, and if you call him while holding a hose he cowers. I can hose him down, when he is really muddy or something and its warm out, but he doesnt really like it. Best way to bathe him is to let him swim, soap him up then throw his ball for him to retrieve to rinse off :)
Those are my dogs. I hope you enjoy reading about them, and remember, Shelters are the best place to find your next furry kid! I have adopted Ziggy, and Forrestt, my cat :)
