How did you acquire your dog?

We got Chance from a rescue shelter named Hopalong Rescue in Berkeley, CA.

Why did you choose him?

He climbed into my partner's lap and licked his face and then drank the rest of his latte.

Where is the best place to find a mixed breed dog?

I would only recommend getting a mixed breed from a rescue agency or shelter.

Why would you recommend a mixed breed dog?

Fewer health problems, great personality, and when you get a rescue dog, I think they know you've done them a great favor.

What is special about your dog?

He's half Jack Russell and half Pit Bull, so he has the tenacity of a Jack and the strength of a Pit. He's very mellow, yet a total clown, not a barker and makes me laugh at least once a day. He also seems to know when I need to play, when I need to be left alone and when I need him to snuggle at my side. He thinks I'm the greatest person in the world, and I think he's the greatest dog in the world, so we compliment each other nicely.

We had to fight to get him. My partner had 3 heart attacks in a 5 month period when he was 38 and went into a serious depression and developed bipolar disorder. I've had 2 failed back surgeries and suffer from chronic pain. We both have HIV and are on disability. So we got letters from doctors and forced our landlords to allow us to have Chance under the Americans With Disabilities Act as an emotional support animal. He's my blood pressure medicine, my therapist, my bestest friend, my companion. He forces me out of the house at least 3 times a day whether or not I want to go out, so my health has benefitted also. He loves us both, but since I was responsible for most of his training and walks, he and I have a special bond that will never be broken. I really can't put into words how much I love him and what he means to me. He's number 2 in my life, right after my partner and there are no limits to what I would do for him, or will do for him when he needs me to be there for his welfare. He's the best investment I've ever made and is truly worth his weight in gold. I really wouldn't trade him for a million dollars.
