I chose Mina because:
1. It was her last day
2. She was not an ideal adoption candidate (too shy)
3. She had kennel cough and a leg injury
4. She was underweight
5. And because I love Pit Bull Terriers.
I should really say that Mina chose me - her sweet, innocent face spoke volumes, pleading for a chance at a good life.
Although, Mina is a purebred APBT she is not registered nor does she have any papers. She is most likely a backyard bred pooch, used as a brood bitch and either thrown out or ran away from a rather neglectful life. I love Pit Bulls and the initial reason for rescuing her was simply to foster her and get her health back up to par. Yep - got her health up and she sort of just stuck around (err...well, I fell in love with her goofy ways and charming pittie grins so it is more like I stuck around for her). I was not actively looking for a purebred Pit Bull Terrier but I am not complaining. =)
Because she is a rescue dog and a foster, the only prerequisite I had for her was that she not be dominance aggressive. She was (and is) far from that with a very submissive personality.
Best place to find a purebred dog (see #5 above) - however, still think the best place to find a purebred Pittie with lots of love to give is at the shelter and NOWHERE else.
There are so many things that are special about Mina that I could write about for days upon days. She is extremely intelligent with a strong desire to learn (and get treats for it) and an extraordinary capability to adapt quickly and effectively to new learning situations. I absolutely love that when she plays with other dogs and the other dog falls over or accidentally gets run over (by Mina, of course), Mina will always run to the dog, do a playbow and give kisses as if to reassure the dog that all is well in the world. I love that when she tries to chase the neighborhood Persian, the Persian slaps her in the face and Mina cowers in fear. I absolutely love that Mina is athletic, fit and trim - a beautiful representative of what a true Pit Bull should look like. I love that no matter how afraid Mina is of adult humans, she will let children hug, pet, poke and prod her with a wagging tail and gentle kisses to all. I love that when Mina does not get her way, she gives me "the look", huffs away and literally sits down with her back to me as if to say "I am sooo not speaking to you!". I love that Mina does the froggy maneuver, dragging her tummy across the carpet (and on command, it is the "battle crawl"). I love that she is very gentle, no matter how excited she is, when she is presented with a treat. I love that she loves to give kisses and butt wags. Most of all, I just love her for being a special, unique, dog whose gifts to the world include innocence and unabashed love - just to name a couple. =)
There are so many cruelties in this world and MIna is a living example of how much a dog can overcome such cruelty and be a loving, playful member of canine societe. ;) She is an ambassador for her breed and takes both criticism and accolades with the same goofy expression painted across her face. Yep, I sure do love my Mina girl. =)
