Keesha: 12 year old black Cocker mix (field or welsh springer???) with a white stripe on tummy and the growing brown stripe on her head (started off no there, next year a spot, and keeps growing, now it's a half circle stripe!). 17.5 inches, 28lbs. Looks like a Cocker but thinner boned and taller.

Kodak: almost 8 year old Alaskan Malamute/Siberian Husky. Mainly black and tan but white underneath. Some "ink spots" on tongue and a snow nose (black nose with pink stripe in center). 27.5 inches and 78 lbs.

Fuji: 2 year old Chow/ Aussie mix. More of an Aussie body but Chow back end and head is even mix. Tongue has a black stripe,we call it her "racing stripe". One ear is slightly floppy, other stands up. Cute tail that slightly curves up with LONG flowing hair. Aussie type hair but more thick, like the chow. Mainly reddish tan but also black in it (especially on her back, the guard hairs). 22.5 inches and 55 lbs.

How did you acquire your dog?

Kodak and Keesha: I was young and uneducated. I got them from ads in the paper.

Fuji: (really my boyfriend's dog but mine too) from the humane society.

Why did you choose them?

Keesha: My favourite movie has always been Lady and the Tramp. When I was 10 my brother moved out with our dog so my dad let me get my own. I chose a Cocker of course but he decided a mix would be better (price, health, peeing issues, ect). When we got to the breeder (an opps litter from a show/breeder person) there were 2. I picked up the buff and said "I want her" until I was corrected that was a boy. Put him down and picked up Keesha instead (I wanted a girl)

Kodak: Being uneducated, I wanted a husky because they're pretty. But didn't find any other than $$$$ or an older one (no doubt training issues) so we settled on a husky/malamute cross since they're closely related. When we went there only boys were left. I picked him because he was so funny and sweet, and also b/c he was the darkest (darkest black and tan, only white on UNDER underside and a little on chest)

Fuji: She was a HS puppy, 4 months, at the adoption center at the Petsmart I was a groomer at. My boyfriend's favourite is a Chow, and even though we knew she was mixed as a pup she looked almost purebred. We played with her awhile and loved her but at the time he lived at home and his dad wouldn't let him get her (chow prejudices). Almost a week later parents caved and she was STILL there so we got her! :)

Where is the best place to find a mixed breed dog?

The pound/rescue of course!!! Just like Fuji :) NEVER from a planned mutt breeding (Kodak was planned, unfortunately (though in a way I'm glad, he's my best friend)). And oops litter is better than planned, but still not good (they should have them fixed!!!)

Why would you recommend a mixed breed dog?

While I think the Malamute is one of the most beautiful creatures to ever walk the earth, the top 10 most beautiful dogs I have seen are mutts. Plus they are generally better health and you save a life when you rescue one (yeah purebreds too of course). Plus you get a unique looking dog usually. However, if buying from a breeder I recommend a purebred b/c I am AGAINST purposely breeding mixes (especially cockapoos)

What is special about your dogs?

Keesha: she's such a sweetie. Loves everyone. Puts up with everything too though now she's starting to stand up for herself against the pup when he annoys her ;)

Kodak: he's my best friend. We do so much together and have so much fun (agility, carting/sledding/ski-joring, trail riding, ect). He always makes me smile. He lives for fun and adventure.

Fuji: She is such a cutie. She KNOWS how to be cute. She learned that stretching is adorable and will get her pet, so she walks in front of you and stretches!!! We got her at 4 months, she housebroke VERY fast and we never had to train her to heal b/c she did it on her own (not right next to us of course but right with us). Everything we teach her she gets in one session perfectly. Though she's shy with strangers and kids, she has NEVER tried to bite, not even in extreme fear. She loves all dogs too. SHe has her own pet cat that she plays and sleeps with.
