Goldy was acquired by my parents when I was 9 years old as a birthday gift (bad idea!). She was purchased from a breeder of Golden Retrievers.
Why Goldy?
The breeder selected her because of her lack of show prospects - she was actually the runt of the litter but turned out to be a very large female Golden (weighed in at 90lbs). My parents, not being experienced at selecting dogs, went with the breeders advice and Goldy came home.
Why a purebred?
Purported to be the "best" family dog - the decision to get a Golden Retriever seemed obvious. Hindsight, of course, is 20/20 and the decision to bring a rambunctious puppy (and a large one at that) into a home of two working parents was not a smart decision.
Where you looking for any specific qualities?
Just a happy, bouncy puppy.
Where is the best place to find a purebred dog?
Depends on the person - if an individual is planning on breeding or showing (or using the dog for anything other than a pet: weight pulling, working, etc) then a qualified and reputable breeder is ideal. A breeder should be able to show pedigrees from up to 5 generations back, have health evaluations and have title papers for whatever event(s) the dog(s) has (have) performed in. I, personally, think the best place to find a purebred dog is through a rescue or a shelter b/c I love shelter and rescue dogs. =)
Goldy was a mistake - a mistake my parents never made again. At age a year and half, Goldy was found a nice home living on 3 acres with a Golden Retriever fanatic and 3 cats. My public service announcement is this: Do not buy a dog as a gift, do not buy a dog for a child unless you plan on caring for the dog and please, please realize that dogs are not property but are living, sentient beings that require so much time, effort and love. In return, a dog will give you its all!
