Baby Girl was born summer of 2001. Baby is 15 lbs of pure love. She likes her mini-koosh ball, alpo prime beef burger treats, and ground, compressed rawhide chews. She sleeps with the cats and I and burrows under the covers like a little gopher. She is a chihuaha mix, possibly with rat terrier or Basenji, and can look my cats in the eye. She's my lap dog, and we think she was abused in the home she was in before her last one. She followed the girls (her former owners) (age 13 & 15) home from school one day and was with them for a year and a half before coming to live with me. We think she's 2 years old now.
How did you acquire your dog?
Baby was Baron's best friend at the apt complex where we used to live. At first, they would romp and frolic whenever they met on potty breaks, and then after they got acquainted (and their humans did too!) they had play dates several times daily. They knew where each other lived, and the mere mention of the other's name would send him/her into a frenzy of tail wagging and happiness. They would often lead us to the other's door when we went outside and were crestfallen if the other dog's humans weren't there to let them play. A month before we moved, Baby nipped at her girls' mother and the mom told me that they were going to euthanize Baby if it happened again, that they wouldn't keep an 'aggressive' dog. I told her at that point that I would take her if they needed to rehome her. They said that they would be reluctant to pass a 'problem' dog to another person but I convinced them that I was serious. 3 months later, when I took Baron to visit (after the move) I found out that she had bit the mom again, this time drawing blood. I was poised to take her but the girls won their parents over with promises of taking better care of her etc. Well, the next time I talked to the family was when they called and asked if I wanted her, because she had nipped a nephew after he was pillow fighting with her (HOW does a dog Pillow fight?). I was in town and went and got her, and now I have 3 dogs =).
Why did you choose him?
I fell in love with Baby over time when she and Baron would play together, and as I saw the far-from-ideal situation that she was in I became determined to get her out of it. I was ready to purchase a UKC registered Rat Terrier puppy at the time that Baby came 'available' and I'm convinced that the timing couldn't have been better. I have a large (Frankie) , medium (Baron) and small (Baby) dog now-- what more could a person want?
Where is the best place to find a mixed breed dog?
Shelters are the best place if you live in a city or urban area. If you are in small towns (as I am) sometimes the best place is the newspaper or word of mouth.
Why would you recommend a mixed breed dog?
Mixed breed dogs often have the best qualities of the breeds that they come from. Two of my dogs are cross-bred, and one is a certified mutt (don't know her lineage =) ).
What is special about your dog?
Baby has the personality of a dog that is thankful for her family. She was a rescue and is the sweetest thing in the world. She likes to be in high places like a cat and washes her paws each night before bed.
