Abby is our Rottweiler. We got her from a friend of mine, who decided to breed her dog, and get pups. Yes, I know, she probably shouldn't have done it, but then I wouldn't have my wonderful Abby!
Why did you choose her?
We chose Abby from almost the day she was born. Just something about her, even at that tiny stage, made me like her. We weren't even looking for another dog, but once the pups were born, that was it! Had to have one!
Why did you decide to have a purebred dog?
I have always loved Rottweilers, but I wasn't looking for one. Actually, I had been doing research on getting a Mastiff. Found a few breeders that weren't too far from me, and who were willing to let me make payments on the litter that was going to be born. But then, Abby came along, and I will never regret the decision to get her.
Were you looking for any specific qualities?
The main quality we were looking for was temperament. Both Abby's parents were easy going laid back dogs, which is what we wanted. I found out I was pregnant around the same time we got Abby, so being good with children would be a big plus!!
Where is the best place to find a purebred dog?
Definitely a breeder, with a good reputation. Really research the breed of dog before getting it. We didn't, but probably should have! I have never gotten a dog from a breeder, so I wouldn't really be able to answer that question really good. But I see the other posters have, so read what they said! :)
What is special about your dog?
Abby is absolutely wonderful with my daughter, Caitlyn. She will tolerate anything that the baby puts out. One of Caitlyn's favorite things to do is sit on Abby's back, while she is laying down. Abby sleeps the whole time :) She is the most tolerant and loving to the baby, out of our three dogs :)
Abby is a wonderful girl. She is now two, and starting to calm down just a bit. Her favorite things to do are chasing balls, swimming and laying around the house. But her most favorite, I would have to say is chasing the small dog, Rowena around in the pasture. Its great fun to watch the two big dogs go after the little one. Rowena has even been seen hanging on Abby's lips! Which Abby just takes. Abby is protective, but only when she needs to be.
One time, I was at the place that I got her from, so she could see her mom ;), and one of the other pup owners was there with one of Abby's brothers. Abby was being a good girl, sitting next to my feet, watching this other dog approach. When the male got close, he jumped at Abby I'm sure, but she thought it was at me I think. Abby stood her ground, growled very deeply and gave him a look like HEY! This is MY mommy! Leave her be! After that, she watched him very closely, and would have nothing to do with him. That has been her only sign of aggression, and I'm sure it was because she wasn't going to let that dog hurt me! But boy, did we get comments after we got her!
I'm sure some of you have heard the same things, with the breed of dog you have. Things like, OH MY GOD! You can't have a Rottweiler and a baby! Rottweilers are so mean! Don't ever let the baby near that dog, or else it will bite her! etc etc. But I never listened, and would tell those people that its how you raise the dog, not the breed of dog! Yes, some breeds are more prone to aggression, but even then, I think if they are raised in a loving home, and are part of the family, you will have no problem! :)
