| from Krista Mifflin, your
Editor and Guide This week in the Mifflin household is Surgery and Recovery Week. My youngest dog had the first of two femoral head ostectomies on Wednesday, and he is, so far, recovering nicely. With the proper care and physical therapy, I have high hopes that he'll return the goofy dog he once was without the associated pain. I would like to remind you all, that any sudden change in behaviour should be thoroughly investigated. A formerly gentle dog turned suddenly mean dog likely has good reason, and a veterinary check-up is the first order of business. Remember, dogs feel all the discomforts of illness and injury, but they can't tell us about them. It's up to us to watch for signs and take appropriate action.

Guarding The easiest way to deal with this is to start from puppyhood. Get your dog used to having you come and take his things away. But what happens if you've left it too long, or you've adopted a dog who's got guarding tendencies?

| If you have questions or just want to
share a story about your favourite furry friend, feel free to post on the
forum! Posting is a great way to make new friends and meet other dog
lovers as well as get great advice from dog experts. 1) Let's discuss the Culture Clash! "As promised, we will be discussing Jean Donaldson's "The Culture Clash" this month (and possibly beyond!). So dust off your copy and get ready for the discussion." ~ EmylyHOST 2) Rescued from Puppy Mill- Behavior Problems "She was rescued from a puppy mill in Lancaster county, PA back in October. Like many puppy mill dogs, she has had little interaction with people or dogs, since she was used as a breeding machine. Her rescuers (God bless them) had her spayed, had 32 teeth removed because they were rotting in her mouth, and had a hernia removed. Her stitches were removed 3 weeks ago..." ~ Patti 3) Rescuing an adult Golden Retriever? "My question....I have only had two dogs my entire life, a collie "nanny" as a child, and then we she crossed the bridge we got a collie mix. Both we adopted as puppies. This rescue organization has puppies, but we have decided to welcome an older (1-3 yrs old) golden in our homes. I don't know anyone with experience in adopting an older dog. Would they still bond with us?" ~ CANDRALEIGH
