Long-Term (or not) Storage of Dry Dog Food

Where do I keep it all, what do I put it in?

It's time to face facts and admit that my former storage bin, the one I keep almost one-hundred-twenty pounds of dry dog food in (subject to fluctuation), has just about had it. The lid doesn't close properly anymore, enticing the more substantial of us to help himself regularly, and I imagine it's beginning to look mighty inviting to ants as well. With the warm weather creeping in, this concern is becoming more pressing. And, well ... let's face it. It's an eyesore, and I spent most of the winter trying to arrange it so it's out of sight. Without further ado, today I retire my dog food bin. It hath served me well these past eight years.

My first find, for appealing storage bins is the Big Bone Storage Bin. Unfortunately for me, it's located in the U.K., but it holds thirty pounds of dry dog food, if any of you in the U.K. are interested. And here it is again, for U.S. residents! But it's still not big enough for me ...

The Vittles Vault line of storage containers looks very promising. Larger sizes, absolutley airtight and even stackable. Kind of bland though, and still not quite what I'm looking for.

For those of you with smaller dogs, there's the Blitz Pour and Store Wall Mounted Pet Food Dispenser, that you can mount on a wall out of the way. The pour chute at the bottom of the bin supposedly makes it easier to fill dog dishes. I don't disagree with that, it would be handy indeed, but how do you stop filling the dish? Definitely something to consider.

Now this is a nice, easy-on-the-eyes solution for hiding those bulky dog food bags. A wooden storage box, with a hinged lid, made from pine with your choice of wood finish, pine or mahogany. Very nice. The description says that you can either drop the bag, or pour directly into the box. My one complaint: it's size. I still need to hide a hundred pounds or more, and this pretty little bin only holds roughly thirty pounds.

I've stumbled on Blitz again, and this time it's the Blitz Stack-n-Stor 100. Yes that number does indicate the amount it can hold, and I think this one will do very nicely. If I need to get another, I can stack it on top. It will take up less floor space than my current Rubbermaid bin as well, and even better, I can put one outside. (Who says it had to be for just dog food?)
