Your Dog and Your Landlord

by Krista Mifflin
for About.com

The largest, and really, the only hurdle in renting with pets, is your potential landlord, his experience with dog owners in the past, and your ability to put forth your dog as a respectable tenant. Is your dog worth all the potential hassles that could erupt? Prove it.

First and Foremost ... the Do NOTS.

  • Do NOT Argue. If the listing states "No Pets" clearly and upfront, don't argue, just keep looking.
  • Do NOT Try to sneak the dog in. You'll always get caught, a dog is not easily hidden, and once caught, you've added to the prejudice against dog owners, no matter how well behaved your dog is.
  • Do NOT Allow your dog to be a nuisance in any shape or form.
  • Do NOT Play up on any of the breed's undesirable reputations. ("He's a terrific guard dog", etc...)
  • Do NOT Fail to clean up after your dog, no matter you are currently residing, as word will get back to your new landlord.

  • The Do List:
  • Do Introduce your dog to your potential, hopefully new, landlord.
  • Do Show the landlord pictures, expound upon all your dog's sterling qualities, make it obvious he's very MUCH a member of the your family.
  • DO Write up a "Good Dog" resume, showcasing everything that would make your dog a good, desirable tenant.
  • Do Get your dog in an obedience class if he hasn't passed one already.
  • Do Consider getting your dog certified with a Canine Good Citizen.
  • Do Get letters of recommendation from your former neighbours, your veterinarian regarding you care of him, your former landlord if you had one, and even friends and family if need be.
  • Things You Can't Control, But Could Make Your Move Easier
If your new potential landlord is a dog lover.

Good luck in your search for pet friendly housing, and may all landlords suddenly develop a change of heart regarding our furry family members!
